Well, since it happened about two weeks ago, it's probably about time I went ahead and posted this. I already posted it elsewhere, so I'll just copy it here, because I'm a lazy fuck and don't feel like writing it again:
Widely hated torture camp Tranquility Bay has closed down. Jamaican government officials have confirmed that the last inmate left the country on 5 January, 2009. All equipment from Tranquility Bay is being sold. It is believed that the closure is due to new passport requirements and illegal loans.
Tranquility Bay was known for abusive tactics to encourage "proper" behaviour in its inmates. Complaints have included physical attack (sometimes resulting in broken bones), sexual assault, and food deprivation (all of which clearly violate articles five and nine of UDHR). Inmates were always taken as children, usually kidnapped with parental approval while they slept. Although inmates were legally required to be given the option of leaving at the age of eighteen, many were unable to, as they could not make arrangements to return home.
Unfortunately, numerous other torture camps still exist. Join NYRA to help close them down as well!
