Curfew, part 2

Went ahead and spoke at the county commission meeting. I went straight after school by bus, so I had to lug everything up five storeys. Waited a bit, said my piece, left because I didn't give a shit about how much they spent on insurance, was told my backpack resembled a bomb, and left.

No curfew, BTW. It's dead for now, probably forever.

Goddamn curfew bullshit

Apparently the county commission tried to push through a curfew here. Although news coverage was spotty originally, the following facts seem to have emerged:
1) It would have applied to anyone 17 or under.
2) The time would have been eleven on weekdays and midnight on weekends.
3) Per state supreme court holding, only a fine and return home would apply. There would be no criminal penalties.

It seems likely that this is never going to happen, but I'll be speaking against it at the next meeting anyway.

An Open Scathing Letter to Svend

Svend, I have a few words for you. "I don't serve the members, I serve ASFAR"? You don't serve the members? Why, then, should we serve you with our votes? Oh, because you serve ASFAR? Well, what is ASFAR? I'd thought that ANY organisation is its members. Sorry, but just because ASFAR has noble goals does not exempt them from the rules of being an organisation. ASFAR is Just Not That Special. You cannot serve ASFAR without serving the members! You botched up on the officer appointments. I still didn't have an issue with you being President, I just wanted the elections re-held to allow it to be done fairly. But saying you don't serve the members? I don't even want you on the board anymore! Lucky for me (and the rest of the membership), you've decided to put removing you from the board on the schedule for the next meeting (we didn't even have to ask!), and you're letting the entire membership vote! I, for one, will support the motion to remove you from the board, and will campaign for others to do so as well, if you do not come up with an explanation for that statement.

Tranquility Bay Closed

Well, since it happened about two weeks ago, it's probably about time I went ahead and posted this. I already posted it elsewhere, so I'll just copy it here, because I'm a lazy fuck and don't feel like writing it again:

Widely hated torture camp Tranquility Bay has closed down. Jamaican government officials have confirmed that the last inmate left the country on 5 January, 2009. All equipment from Tranquility Bay is being sold. It is believed that the closure is due to new passport requirements and illegal loans.

Tranquility Bay was known for abusive tactics to encourage "proper" behaviour in its inmates. Complaints have included physical attack (sometimes resulting in broken bones), sexual assault, and food deprivation (all of which clearly violate articles five and nine of UDHR). Inmates were always taken as children, usually kidnapped with parental approval while they slept. Although inmates were legally required to be given the option of leaving at the age of eighteen, many were unable to, as they could not make arrangements to return home.

Unfortunately, numerous other torture camps still exist. Join NYRA to help close them down as well!

Vote on change.org

Be sure to vote to lower the voting age to sixteen on change.org. The top ten voted ideas will be presented to President-elect Obama shortly before his inauguration. There's currently only 174 votes for this in round two voting (it got through round one of voting fairly well). However, it's currently in sixty-ninth place and needs 2566 votes just to get to tenth! Remember that other ideas will be voted on as well, so this really needs your vote!
