Identifying anonymous users

Researchers have "found" a method of identifying anonymous social network users. How? By seeing who their friends are on multiple networks. Although this won't get a government name, it does create a clear identity for the user. Who would have known that it would be possible to identify someone based on their use of a service intended to disseminate personal information?
